Small town brewery makes big waves

They took a chance opening a craft brewery in a small city, and it has paid off.

Fitzsimmons Brewing Company has only been in business in a light industrial area of Airdrie since last October, and it’s already winning awards and getting a lot of interest from around the province.

Co-owner Pamela Jarosz said she had no idea the response would be so overwhelming.

“In the first couple months that we were open, we actually won Gold at the Alberta Beer Awards for our East Lake Amber.”

Jarosz says one of their secrets to success is supporting the community, either through charitable events, like a food bank fundraiser, or collaborating with local restaurants like Hayloft, First & Vine and Main Street Beer & BBQ.

“At the end of the day, we make beer and we want to support other businesses in the community,” said Jarosz.

“We’re not in the business of making food, so if we can partner with local food trucks, local restaurants, promote their businesses as well, that’s what we want to do.”

Jarosz says six month ago it was just her, fellow co-owner Cody Fitzsimmons and their brewer. Since then, they’ve had to hire more staff for their very popular tap room and will soon be bringing in more people to help with production.
