City of Calgary monitoring beaver dams

The City of Calgary is keeping a close eye on one of Canada’s official emblems.

City parks ecologist Tanya Hope said while they don’t keep track of the number of beavers in the city, they do manage issues that arise, such as flooding.

“An adult beaver can take 200 trees in a year so that’s a lot of canopy being lost. Their dams can also cause flooding but they do a lot of good as well,” she said. “[The dams] can do water storage and they can also filter and clean water as it goes through them.”

Hope says they do have a contractor that traps the beavers when there is a problem.

Anyone who spots a dam that is causing flooding is encouraged to call the city at 311.
