Spidey senses tingling: Rise in eight-legged bugs in Calgary

It appears spiders are taking over Calgary.

Tadek Sampson is the Canadian Manager for Buzz Boss, a residential bug control company. He says the precipitation in March is causing the boom.

“A lot of snowfall, a lot of precipitation in March, which is really done a lot to increase the insect population. Spider populations are driven by insect populations — the more food they have, just like any predator, there’s going to be an increase in predator population.”

Now don’t rush for the flamethrower, there are some ways to keep the creepy-crawlies out of your home.

“If you can keep the bugs out of your home, there’s less incentive for the spiders to be in there. So simple things like good sanitation inside the house, keep the flies away, that will make a big difference. As well it’s a matter of keeping airflow around your home.”

Sampson adds that having a lot of LED lights will also help keep them away.

But even though you may be a bit freaked out by spiders, it’s important to remember they are good bugs to have inside because they will kill other annoying insects.
