Driver who suffered medical event charged in death of pedestrian

A driver who suffered a medical event before crashing into a pedestrian at Sunridge Mall last year is being charged for her death.

James Beagrie, 45, faces a charge of criminal negligence causing death for the May 23, 2017 incident at the northeast Calgary mall.

Calgary Police Services said the driver of a Ford F150 was traveling northeast towards an access road while a woman driving a Toyota Corolla was approaching the same road from the opposite direction.

Police say the driver suffered a medical event before veering off the road, then back onto the street in the direction of the Corolla.

After hitting the car, the truck mounted the curb and hit a 48-year-old woman, who later died of her injuries.

There was another man in the truck with Beagrie and both of them, along with the driver of the Corolla, sustained minor injuries.
