Impaired-related charges laid in Edmonton after death of teenage pedestrian

EDMONTON – A charge of impaired driving causing death has been laid after a 16-year-old girl died in a truck-pedestrian collision in Edmonton.

Police say the teen was hit at a marked crosswalk with flashing lights in a north-central neighbourhood around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday.

They say the driver fled in a pickup truck, but an off-duty police officer who had stopped for the pedestrian saw what happened and followed the truck while providing information to a 911 dispatcher.

An arrest was made soon after.

The girl was treated at the scene but was pronounced dead soon after arrival at hospital.

Shane Stevenson, who is 47, is also charged with driving over the legal limit causing death and hit and run causing death.
