Flames leave Saddledome for last time this season

Monday marked locker clean out day at the Saddledome for the Calgary Flames.

The club finished outside of the playoff picture by 11 points with a final record of 37-35-10 — placing them 20th overall in the NHL standings.

Of note this season, Johnny Gaudreau led the team in points (84) and assists (60). Despite being shut down early due to injury, Sean Monahan scored a team-high 31 goals.

Only a handful of players suited up in all 82 contests: Mikael Backlund, Dougie Hamilton, Mark Giordano, Sam Bennett and Michael Stone.

Other news coming from the Saddledome:

– Matthew Tkachuk said he suffered a concussion, which kept him out of the lineup toward the end of the season. He also confirmed he wouldn’t be suiting up for the USA at the upcoming World Championship tournament.

– Johnny Gaudreau is undecided about playing for the USA. He stated he wants to go home and spent some time with his dad, who was in the hospital not long ago.

– Mikael Backlund will represent Sweden at the Worlds. Michael Frolik is undecided if he’ll play for the Czech Republic. Mike Smith won’t play for Canada; Mark Giordano also declined.

– Veteran forward Matt Stajan is an unrestricted free agent. The 34-year-old said he still wants to play hockey somewhere next season.
