Calgary Flames eliminated from playoff race, changes coming

It’s a sad day for Calgary Flames fans.

Monday’s 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings officially ended any hope of making the playoffs.

Looking back on the season, there weren’t too many bright spots.

Sportsnet 960 The FAN morning show host Dean ‘Boomer’ Molberg said the highest grade this squad deserves is an ‘F’.

“What’s lower than ‘F’?” he asked. “It’s a failure right across the board. In the off-season the team gave up draft picks to bring in players, the expectation was growth, maybe a 100 point year, and instead it’s as big a disappointment probably in the last five or six seasons.”

Boomer added no one saw this coming.

“It was assumed it was going to be a playoff year so this one stings,” he said. “The special teams, the goaltending let them down, they weren’t particularly injured that much and they could not win at home, their home record is a big reason why they are out.”

He expects one of the first dominoes to fall will be the firing of head coach Glen Gulutzan.

“Is it Gulutzan’s fault? Partially, for sure, he’s got a hand in it and I can’t imagine that they would start next season with him in there again, I think it’ll be a new coach here next fall,” he said.

Boomer said the mix just seemed off all season, and he believes there will be a number of player moves in the off-season with an eye on generating better chemistry, and maybe a power play that can score a goal or two.

The Flames have five games left in the season. Next up is the Columbus Blue Jackets who visit the Saddledome on Thursday night.
