Committee endorses new fire standard for city’s new communities

A city committee has voted 6-3 to adopt a new ten minute fire standard for Calgary’s new communities.

However, the plan is not without its critics.

Calgary Fire Chief Steve Dongworth says he has some difficulty moving off their current response times targets.

“Anytime you increase response times, you increase risk to people, property and the environment,” says Dongworth.

Calgary Fire Department had been operating under a seven minute target, which was being met 90 per cent of the time, until the last council relaxed it.

Ward Six Councillor Jeff Davison voted against the idea.

He sees some problems for the city and in his own ward.

“I’m disappointed that we haven’t come to a better conclusion on how we balance development with citizen safety,” said Davison.

The motion now gets forwarded to council on March 19.
