Young girl dies in ski accident at Castle Mountain

A 10-year-old girl has died following an accident during a school trip at the Castle Mountain Ski Resort on Tuesday.

The girl was with other students from Canyon Elementary in Pincher Creek when she lost control and hit a pole.

Despite wearing a helmet, she suffered serious head injuries and was taken the Alberta Children’s Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries Tuesday night.

RCMP Sgt. Mark Harrison said support is being offered to the community.

“Ranchlands Victim Services Unit is involved and they will provide any assistance needed by the family,” Harrison said. “We’re also involved with the Canyon School and providing them with any assistance they require, they also have counsellors in place.”

Jason Crawford with the resort said the death has shaken the community and staff.

He added all children on trips must go through training.

“They take a lesson that’s mandatory with the school system, and then they have to pass a ski test in order to be able to move on to the ski hill,” he said. “Then they’re chaperoned by teachers after that.”

The RCMP and medical examiner are investigating.
