Travel: Tofino in the off season

A winter getaway to the beach is on many people’s wish lists right now, but this is one destination with a difference:

It’s in Canada.

Travel writer Jody Robbins says Tofino perfect this time of year.

“I think it was made for off season,” she said.

Winter weather is mild on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

“You can explore all these ocean activities,” she said.

“You can still go surfing. You can still go on marine life watching tours. You can still take a boat or a float plane to Hot Springs Cove. There’s also sea kayaking.”

After a long day out, Robbins says Tofino has plenty of dining options.

“If you dine at The Pointe in Wickaninnish Inn, around three o’clock, before the sun goes down, you get these massive, wonderful views of the ocean.”
Wolf in the Fog has won many accolades. It was En Route’s Best New Restaurant a couple years ago.”

There are direct flights to Tofino, but for the true Vancouver Island experience, you might want to land in Nanaimo or Victoria and drive the winding and scenic Pacific Rim Highway.
