Calgary in need of more snow dumping areas

Ever wonder what happens to all the snow the city removes from Priority 1 roads?

Right now, crews truck it to one of three sites; one downtown, one in the northeast, and another in the southeast, but city transportation spokesperson Tara Norton-Merrin says they are looking at creating some additional snow dump areas.

“As we may lose one of our sites to development as the city continues to grow, so, you know, obviously as the city continues to grow we’ll be removing more snow every year from our roads and we’ll need additional capacity,” she said.

She says they actually ran out of room at the existing snow dumps during the winter of 2013-2014, when they started clearing out residential areas because people couldn’t get out of their neighbourhoods.
