Travel: sun destinations with a difference

Holiday getaway seekers in Calgary are looking for something a little different this year.

Travel writer Jody Robbins says some unusual destinations are gaining interest.

According to data from search engine KAYAK, Hawaii has dropped out of the top ten.

“it’s been replaced by Peru and Colombia and South Africa,” said Robbins.

“These three overseas destinations saw a 80 per cent increase in searches from Calgarians.”

Robbins explains why seasoned travellers might be looking further afield, to places like Peru.
“You’ve got Machu Pichu. Foodies love it. It’s got three of the world’s top rated restaurants out of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The same with South Africa. The South African Rand is quite low right now, so you get a lot of bang for your buck if you go there.”

Another hot spot is Purtugal, mainly because it’s much easier to get there now.
“Of course the Brits have know about it and the Algarve for years, but it’s really just popped up on our radar and I think mainly it’s because there’s a lot of Air Transat flights that are now going out of Toronto. So we’re seeing a lot of Canadian Interest.
