City of Calgary gives a sneak peek into New Years celebrations

How will you be ringing in the new year?

The City of Calgary gave a preview of what’s in store at this year’s celebration at City Hall Thursday.

It includes skating, dancing, a parade at Olympic Plaza and something special to end 2017.

Manager of Arts and Culture Sarah Iley said a ball will be dropped for the countdown but that’s not all.

“When we hit midnight we hope everybody’s attention will be drawn to the Calgary Tower where we will be setting off fireworks for the very first time because it’s the 50th anniversary of the Calgary Tower in 2018.”

Iley adds there will be the traditional skating at Olympic Plaza, ice carvings, a multi-cultural parade and a family dance party inside the Municipal Atrium.

The roads will be closed off at McLeod Trail to make room for food trucks.

Hot chocolate and fire pits will also be on site to keep people warm during the festivities.
