German skier dies from injuries suffered in Lake Louise crash

A skier who was seriously injured in a crash while competing in the the Nor-Am Cup in Lake Louise on Tuesday has died.

Max Burkhart, 17, passed away on Wednesday in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Burkhart crashed into the netting and was flown to a Calgary area hospital by STARS air ambulance after being tended to by ski patrol, doctors and paramedics.

“Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine are devastated about this tragic loss of life and sends its deepest condolences to his family and teammates. Alpine Canada and Alberta Alpine encourage the ski family around the world to support the athlete’s family and teammates through this difficult time,” officials said in a statement to 660 NEWS.

A spokesperson from Lake Louise Ski Resort says staff and everyone who helped keep him alive on the hill after the incident sends their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, teammates, and everyone competing in the event.

The victim was already en route to hospital as RCMP reached the ski resort two hours east of Calgary.

“Our role in situations like this is to assist the Medical Examiner in determining the cause or manner of death, we conduct an investigation at the scene, taking photographs and witness statements, that sort of thing,” said Corporal Curtis Peters.

The family has since been notified and they’re in the process of making arrangements to have Burkhart returned home.
