Flames destroy northeast business in two alarm fire

Flames destroyed a business and caused damage to surrounding units at a northeast strip mall Sunday morning. The Calgary Fire Department responded to a blaze off 80 Avenue and Taradale Drive N.E. at about 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, they saw smoke and flames coming from one end of the building and a second alarm was called in. Ladder trucks were used to surround the building and keep the fire from spreading to a nearby condo complex.

“[It’s] very hurtful right because I know that their business started growing a little bit,” said Eric, who lives nearby and frequents the strip mall. “So seeing this is very painful.”

The fire gutted the space where a boutique retailer operated his business. An employee working the nightshift at a local gas station said a blast was heard at about midnight. No one was hurt in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.

Enmax and ATCO were also called in to cut power and gas to the building. The fire was extinguished at about 5 a.m. Sunday but firefighters remained on scene for hours to manage hot spots and flare ups.
