Police investigate attempted armed robbery just a few doors down from strip mall fire

Just hours before a blaze destroyed a business in the northeast an attempted robbery took place at a liquor store a few stores down.

Calgary Police responded to reports of a robbery at 7171 80 Avenue N.E. just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Manager of the liquor store Praveen Sathya said when a young man entered the store he knew something wasn’t right and asked him for his I.D.

“And he took the bottle he said ‘brother I want to grab one bottle’ and ‘I said no way you look like underage.'”

That’s when the young man allegedly tried to steal a bottle of liquor and an altercation took place where the offender pulled out a knife.

“He was like fighting with me and he just take the knife and I was like okay okay that’s fine, ” said Sathya.

The young man tried to flee but Sathya had already locked the door so the offender couldn’t get out.

Sathya then went to the back to call police and the offender, knowing he wasn’t going anywhere, calmed down.

“I just took him and put him inside the washroom,” he said.

When police arrived the suspect was taken into custody, the offender was detained and investigators are trying to determine if any charges will be laid. By Sunday morning, Sathya was still waiting to get inside the store, which was off limits as firefighters worked on hot spots from the nearby blaze.
