#MeToo movement jumps from the screen to a Vancouver rally

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Me Too movement is jumping from the digital world to the real world.

As people continue to come forward with stories about sexual assault they’ve faced, a rally has been held in Vancouver.

Samantha Monckton, one of the organizers, says the social media movement has opened a lot of people’s eyes – including her own.

” (I’ve been) looking at people differently, been on the street thinking ‘maybe they have a situation that they have encountered too’, there’s so many ‘Me Toos’ our there. We need to do action now, we need to stop this from occurring in the future.”

“Since it’s been publicized more heavily in the past month, I’ve noticed in my (social media) feed there’s just been a crazy amount of stories coming out.”

The Me Too movement started back in 2006 but has exploded on social media recently with some high profile sexual assault allegations involving Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, and others.

Monckton says the conversation is absolutely helping but at some point more action will need to be taken by men and women to change the culture that allows sexual assault.

The rally ran from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

“We’ve had a lot of people message us and say ‘thank you for creating a supportive environment for us to talk about this.'”
