New poll shows Bill Smith leading mayoral race

A major polling firm says Calgary’s council will have a new leader come Monday.

Mainstreet Research asked 1,500 Calgarians who they would be voting for over a two day period earlier this week, and found 52 per cent of decided and leaning voters would be marking an “x” next to Bill Smith’s name, with 39 per cent voting for Naheed Nenshi.

Mainstreet’s Quito Maggi said more than half of Smith supporters have been happy with his performance which surprised him.

“He’s made quite a few errors but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to make up this difference and I do expect to see Bill Smith be the mayor on Monday night,” Maggi said.

However, Maggi said Smith’s lead did shrink six points since the previous poll done for Postmedia, so they will continue to watch the situation over the weekend before Election Day on Monday.
