ASIRT releases more details on officer-involved shooting

The province’s police watchdog says a man shot by Calgary officers Wednesday night was carrying an axe and a hammer when he emerged from the garage of a northeast home.

The 40-year-old was the subject of a domestic violence investigation and police say they negotiated with him for more than an hour before he came at them with the weapons, in the community of Mayland Heights.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates the actions of the officers, says members used a taser and firearms to subdue the suspect.

Calgary police have said the injured man is known to them and will face charges in relation to the domestic incident.

The man is still in hospital, in serious but stable condition.
