Shambhala Music Festival evacuation alert as wildfire jumps Salmo River

SALMO (NEWS 1130) – An evacuation order has been expanded in the Nelway area, after a wildfire jumped a river towards an electronic music festival in the West Kootenay.

The BC Wildfire Service is reporting that the McCormick Creek wildfire has jumped the Salmo River toward the Shambhala Music Festival and is also moving in an easterly direction towards the community of Nelway. An evacuation order for Nelway has been expanded, and the festival area remains on evacuation alert.

The fire is now approximately 250 hectares in size and is behaving unpredictably. There are 27 BC Wildfire Service personnel battling the fire.

Organizers of the festival say they are communicating with local government to stay ahead of the situation. A statement on the festival’s website says while the forest fire is not currently affecting the event, all guests should be prepared for changing conditions. The Shambhala Music Festival runs until Monday.
