Chinese community will play big part in Canada 150 celebrations

With Canada Day just around the corner, there was a little bit of a preview of one of the performances that will happen here in Calgary and across the country.

On July 1st, Chinese dance and drumming groups will simultaneously perform in different cities as part of the Atlantic to Pacific Tour by the Legacy 150 Celebrations Society.

Chairman of the tour’s committee, Richard Wong, says it’s to show how important it is to the Chinese community is to be Canadian.

“We’re Canadian, we’re proud, and we’re happy to be here, 150 years is a very historical day to celebrate.” said Wong.

Wong also hopes to demonstrate to Calgarians how important Chinese people have been in shaping the country, including building the national railway and serving in wars.

“We are proud of that, and in the future we want to do more, and that’s why we organize this nationwide simultaneous drumming to invite all Canadians to join in to create a real historical event.”

There was a lion and dragon dance at Wednesday’s event in the northwest.

The Calgary portion of the performance will happen in Chinatown at noon on Canada Day.
