Seven Humboldt penguins drown at Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is mourning the death of seven Humboldt penguins, found Thursday morning in the Penguin Plunge exhibit.

According to officials, the birds were in their holding area, which is regularly used to house the animals.

The zoo’s veterinary team has determined the birds died as a result of drowning.

“This is devastating news,” Director of Animal Care Jamie Dorgan said. “We have launched a full investigation so we can try to understand what happened and prevent further incidents like this from happening again.”

There were a total of 22 birds within the Humboldt colony.

Three other species live in the Penguin Plunge including Kings, gentoos and rockhopper penguins.
