Calgary oil and gas company fined after leak

A major fine Friday afternoon for a Calgary oil and gas company over the release of a deadly gas twice at a northern Alberta oilsands facility.

The province has fined Canadian Natural Resources Limited a half million dollars after hydrogen sulfide was released at its horizon project in 2010 and 2012.

They’ve been fined $350,000 for the first instance in May of 2010 when the gas escaped at both the ground level and through a flare stack and while the company did notify the province several days after the event, such a release requires immediate notification.

The second incident happened in August of 2012.

Of the total penalty, $425,000 will be directed to researchers from the University of Calgary who will use the funds to research the toxicological effects of chemicals measured in the air in and around Fort MacKay.
