Garland, accused in triple murder, makes brief court appearance

Douglas Garland, the man accused in the murder of Kathryn and Alvin Liknes along with their grandson Nathan O’Brien, made a brief court appearance via CCTV Thursday morning.

The case has been put off until next month.

He’ll be back in court Sept. 17 for a pre-preliminary hearing meeting, but it will still be six or eight months before there will be a preliminary hearing.

Lawyers say there is a hard drive full of disclosure that needs to be given to the defence, which should happened early next week.

The 54-year-old is charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of second degree murder in connection to the trio, who vanished from a home in the southwest neighbourhood of Parkhill six weeks ago.

Even though no bodies have been recovered, police still laid murder charges.

The Liknes family has been rocked by the tragedy and people can help by making donations to a trust fund at any CIBC location.
