Canada wins gold, bronze in women’s slopestyle

Canada’s Dara Howell has won Canada’s fourth gold medal of the Sochi Olympics.

The Huntsville, Ont., native won the inaugural women’s slopestyle ski competition.

She scored 94.20 in her first run.

Canada briefly led the medal count with nine overall, only to be eclipsed by Norway later on Tuesday.

Quebec City’s Kim Lamarre won bronze with an 85.00 second run while Devin Logan of the U.S. took silver.

In a tweet, Howell thanked Canadians for their support.

Yuki Tsubota of Whistler, B.C., was taken off the course on a stretcher after a nasty crash off a jump.

It appeared that Tsubota’s knee was driven into her face as she tried to make the landing.

Tsubota finished sixth with a 71.60 first run.

Medal favourite Kaya Turski of Montreal fell twice in qualifying.
