More mothers these days are older and more educated

It was once said that a mother is a person who sees there are only four pieces of pie for five people, and promptly announces that she never did care for pie.

Mother’s Day is the day that we appreciate that type of sacrifice and undying love that can only come from mom.

On a day that honours mothers everywhere, there’s new evidence of how different moms are these days.

A PEW Research Centre report has found some major changes over the past two decades.

The study says that age 30 used to be considered late for having children, but now one in seven babies in the U.S. are born to women 35 and older.

There are also many more unmarried mothers now, accounting for a record four in ten in 2008.

New moms are also more educated than they were in the past; most now have had at least some post secondary schooling, while only 40 per cent had back in 1990.
