Minister to take action after hearing shocking stats from report

The province’s health minister says the amount of exercise Alberta kids are getting, just isn’t acceptable.

That’s Gene Zwozdesky’s response after hearing that a new report card gave children, and their parents, a failing grade for physical activity.

In Alberta, only 11-per cent of kids meet the daily requirement of 90 minutes per day.

Zwozdesky says the numbers show more needs to be done and tells 660News it will start this fall with the first-ever ‘wellness forum.’

“This will be an opportunity for numerous stakeholders to come together and discuss the other side of the equation, that frankly, jurisdictions don’t pay as much attention to as they should, and that’s the wellness side, the prevention side,” he says.

Zwozdesky says health problems like inactivity or obesity are putting a lot of strain on the health care system and it will only get worse if nothing is done.

After the forum, he says hopes to set up a strategy with some fellow ministers to try to get kids more physically active.
