MONTREAL - Police are asking for help from the public to find vandals responsible for thousands of dollars in damage at a Montreal police station.

Eleven patrol cars were trashed early Saturday after 15 to 20 people entered the building's parking lot, breaking car windows, destroying on-board computers and damaging some of the bodywork, police said.

A few of the station's windows were broken and the wall tagged with anti-police graffiti.

The vandals left behind a parking lot littered with shards of glass, rocks and hammers.

The station was empty at the time of the incident and there were no injuries.

Montreal police say they don't know who was responsible for the midnight attack.

"if we knew who did this they'd already be under arrest," Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursiere said.

"It would be a pleasure to arrest them."

Lacoursiere said the damage was costly.

"The evaluation will be done over the coming days, but we're talking in the tens of thousands of dollars."

Security has been added to a number stations on Montreal police territory.

Two years ago, vandals set fire to six patrol cars in a police station parking lot in east-end Montreal.
