Calgarians can expect to see another name on the ballot when they vote for our new mayor.
Naheed Nenshi has now officially launched his campaign.
Nenshi is a business professor at Mount Royal University and the founder of the Better Calgary Campaign.
He tells 660News he decided to run because he doesn't see the change Calgary needs in the current list of candidates.
Nenshi is a native Calgarian and has worked with the United Nations and a number of Fortune 500 companies.
The total number of mayoral candidates now sits at seven.
Meanwhile, Duanne Bratt, a political scientist at Mount Royal University tells 660News by the fall, we could see as many as 20 candidates.
He says one benefit to that could translate into more Calgarians casting their ballots compared to the last civic election, where only about 35 per cent of us voted.
Prior to that only about 20 per cent of Calgarians voted. Bratt does expect this year's turnout to be very high because it is an open large race with no incumbent running.
Bratt expects voters won't decide this election on issues, but rather will vote for the person they think will do the best job.
We could find out on Monday who the next mayoral candidate will be.
An e-vite sent out to supporters of Alderman Bob Hawkesworth says he will make an announcement at 4 p.m. sharp, near North Glenmore Park.
It's widely expected that Hawkesworth will be throwing his name in the hat for the city's top job.
