The University of Calgary has approved a new student service fee which will start in September.
The $450 fee will be rolled out over the next three years with students paying $150 this year and $300 the following year, before it hits the full amount in 2012.
Alan Harrison, provost of the U of C, tells 660News the university is dealing with a deficit and everyone including students need to bear a small part of the financial burden.
The mandatory fee will cover as number of school services including student advisers, health and wellness, student aid and the Disability Resource Centre.
Student leaders at the U of C say they are disappointed with the fee and are concerned by the lack of parameters for future increases.
