Emergency crews spent Sunday morning containing an ammonia leak in a southeast industrial park building.

The leak was detected before 8:00 a.m. by a security guard at XL Foods on Brandon Street S.E.

It happened after a refrigeration unit broke down inside the building, spewing the chemical into the air.

Acting Battalion Chief Kevin Haines tells 660News the fire department fielded a number of calls from residents downwind of the incident, but adds there was no health threat.

Fire crews used a massive water spray to absorb the leaked ammonia and ventilated the building for a number of hours.
