The city is looking at imposing a "private tree by-law" in an effort to prevent home owners from chopping down trees on their own private property.

The move would follow similar restrictions already in place in other Canadian cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa.

There are currently no restriction preventing Calgarians from cutting down trees on their own property, but that could change come the spring time when aldermen make a decision on how it is they can protect some of the $400 million worth of trees in our city.

Alderman Peter Demong tells The Calgary Sun he is adamantly against the whole concept.
