The Winter X Games opened in Salt Lake City Thursday on a sombre note.

A tribute was paid to Sarah Burke, who died after a training accident two weeks ago.

ESPN's Sal Masekela says the death of the 29-year-old athlete leaves a huge void.

"If you met Sarah Burke once, you had a friend for life, she was a superstar with the humility of a rookie," he said.

Before the start of the games, all of the athletes paid an emotional tribute to the woman who was not only the best in the sport, but almost single-handedly assured it would be in the next winter games.

Hundreds of skiers holding torches moved silently down an unlit hill with the image of Sarah Burke glowing from a symbolic pair of skis at the bottom of the hill.
