A local group has launched a new sexual assault awareness campaign, featuring several graphic posters.
The Don't Be That Guy campaign targets men between the ages of 18 and 24 and aims to change their views on what constitutes as sexual assault.
The group behind the campaign, SAVCalgary, is pushing the message that offenders are 100% responsible for their actions. It doesn't matter if you or your partner have been using drugs or alcohol. Being intoxicated or under the influence of drugs does not excuse criminal behaviour and is not an acceptable defence.
"You can no longer hide behind the mistaken belief that it's okay to use drugs or alcohol [as an excuse] or think because a woman did not give you a 'no' answer, that it means 'yes'," says Police Chief Rick Hanson.
According to police, 62 per cent of sexual assaults investigated in 2010 involved a victim who was incapacitated by alcohol or drugs.
SAVCalgary says they're taking a different approach with their campaign by targeting those who may commit the crime, instead of potential victims.
Typically, sexual assault awareness campaigns target those who may become victims of sexual assault, giving them prevention tips.
Officials are also hoping more victims will come forward as a result of the posters.
