USS Friday, July 7 at 9pm

When something comes along that won’t be put under a thumb, what then? No, chaos doesn’t consume the earth, but it does often leave people wondering where to place the duo with a sound that is equal parts science and art, a convergence of gentle melody and driving beat. Like a science experiment set to music, what they do melts down acoustic rock, EDM, Dub, Hip-Hop, Orchestral, and Pop transforming it into an entirely new element. It explodes, it implodes, and it is a pure chemical reaction.

Just know that if figuring out USS is your main concern, you might be waiting for a very long while. Vocalist/guitarist Ashley Boo-Schultz and hypeman/turntablist Human Kebab have always existed hanging in a sort of myth-like state, allowing the music they make together to first speak for itself, and empowering listeners to take from the sophisticated sound whatever they will. While USS is on a constant quest for meaning, the interpretation of it is largely up to you.

Theory of a Deadman Saturday, July 8 at 9pm

For more than a decade, Theory Of A Deadman has been among the most distinctive and popular bands in hard rock history, combining frank, earnest lyricism and extraordinary melodies with massive power and electrifying dynamics. With singer/songwriter Tyler Connolly at the helm, the Vancouver-based band has earned a fervent fan following as well as a long line of multi-format hits, among them the #1 Mainstream Rock breakthrough, “Bad Girlfriend” (found on 2008’s RIAA platinum certified “SCARS & SOUVENIRS”).

Like any hard rock outfit worth its salt, Theory Of A Deadman has spent much of its existence on the road. In addition to countless headline dates, the band has shared stages on an array of festival tours alongside such like-minded acts as Alter Bridge, Stone Sour, and Mötley Cru?e. A wide range of live dates spanning headline dates and festival appearances are scheduled through the summer. Log on to www.theoryofadeadman.com/tour for up to the minute details and ticket information.

Big Brothers Big Sisters All-Stars For Kids!
Aug 17 – Aug 31 all-day
Big Brothers Big Sisters All-Stars For Kids!

Today’s Kids Are Tomorrow’s All-Stars.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area (BBBS) annual fundraising campaign, All-Stars For Kids is back! For the second year in a row, the campaign will see local sports stars and Olympians using their public platforms to help raise funds in support of mentoring programs for children and youth.

Running throughout August, All-Stars For Kids is supported by Gary Nissen and Qualico, who together have pledged to match every donation up to $100,000. All of the money raised from the campaign will be used to create and nurture life-changing mentoring relationships for children and youth who are facing adversity and in need of support.

BBBS has enlisted a group of high profile athletes, media personalities and other supporters to help spread the word about the campaign. Calgary Flames star centre Sean Monahan, Canadian Olympic women’s wrestling champion Jasmine Mian, Olympic gold medal curler John Morris, and Calgary Stampeders Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell are the featured All-Stars for the campaign.

Many local businesses have also stepped forward to host fundraising events throughout the month that will give the public additional opportunities to get involved.

Last year, BBBS served over 1,700 children and youth, many of whom are dealing with significant adversities such as death, substance abuse, mental health issues, and poverty. Research has proven that supportive relationships like those fostered by BBBS help children to overcome stressful life challenges so that they can grow into thriving, resilient adults.

A study by the Boston Consulting Group found that every $1 invested in mentoring by BBBS returns $18 to society. Children who have been mentored are more likely to finish high school, earn more in their lifetime, give back to their community, and live healthier lives.

Support #AllStarsForKids by donating, participating in community events, and sharing their own mentoring stories on social media. For more information, visit allstarcampaign.ca.

Life Saving September

Life Saving September

It is September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Canadian Blood Services and Kids Cancer Care would like to help raise awareness of childhood cancer.  If you haven’t scheduled your group donation, please consider a donation in honour of these childhood heroes.

If you already have a group donation booked, please consider increasing your targets.  Over 1,700 children are diagnosed with cancer each year in Canada; many of them needing blood products in order to support their treatments.  Through your partnership with Canadian Blood Services and Kids Cancer Care, you are helping each child fight, and hopefully win, their battle with cancer.

When people donate blood, stem cells, cord blood, or become an organ, eye or tissue donor, what they are really doing is giving life. This year, 100,000 new blood donors will be needed to meet patient needs. That’s more than 1,900 new donors every week! Join the movement to Give Life and encourage donors to recruit a friend!

Join the movement…

Book your appointment to give life now by downloading the GiveBlood App or visit blood.ca.

Register for stem cell donation today at blood.ca/stem-cells.

Penn & Teller in Calgary @ Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Oct 20 @ 12:00:00 AM – 12:00:00 AM
Penn & Teller in Calgary @ Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium

For over 40 years Penn & Teller have defied labels—and at times physics and good taste– by redefining the genre of magic and inventing their own very distinct niche in comedy. With sold out runs on Broadway, world tours, Emmy-winning TV specials, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and hundreds of outrageous appearances on everything from Fallon to Friends, The Simpsons to Colbert, Modern Family to Top Chef, comedy’s most enduring team show no signs of slowing down.

With an amazing eight wins, including 2015, as “Las Vegas Magicians of the Year,” their 15-year run at The Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino makes them the longest running and one of the most-beloved headline acts in Las Vegas history, outselling every other resident magician on The Strip.

Their acclaimed Showtime series, Penn & Teller: BS! was nominated for 13 Emmys and is the longest-running series in the history of the network. The show tackled the fakes and frauds behind such topics as alien abduction, psychics and bottled water.

Currently they host the hit series Penn & Teller: Fool Us! for The CW Network, on which up-and-comers and magic veterans try to fool Penn & Teller for a chance to star in the duo’s hit Las Vegas stage show.

Along the way, they’ve written New York Times Best-Sellers, hosted their own Emmy nominated variety show for FX, starred in their own specials for ABC, NBC and Comedy Central and produced the critically lauded feature film documentary The Aristocrats. Their acclaimed documentary, Tim’s Vermeer, follows Texas-based inventor Tim Jenison on his quest to discover the methods used by Dutch Master painter Johannes Vermeer. The Sony Pictures Classics film was nominated for a BAFTA and shortlisted for the 2014 Oscars.

As individuals, they are just as prolific. Teller directed versions of Macbeth and The Tempest that toured to raves from The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, co-wrote and directed the Off-Broadway thriller Play Dead and has written two books. Penn has written three books, including the New York Times Best Sellers, “God No!” and “Presto!” hosted the NBC game show Identity and donned his ballroom shoes for the 2008 season of ABC’s hit Dancing With The Stars. Penn recently showed his business savvy on two seasons of NBC’s All-Star Celebrity Apprentice.

With inclusions in the New York Times Crossword Puzzle, as answers on Jeopardy and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, their status as cultural icons and the preeminent duo in comedy was once again reinforced when Katy Perry personally asked them to co-star in the video for her #1 song, “Waking Up in Vegas.”

Penn & Teller triumphantly returned to Broadway this past summer in a smash six-week long engagement that USA Today called, “Deliciously unsettling.” It was the highest-grossing non-musical on Broadway for its entire run.
