VANCOUVER – Camilo scored two goals and assisted the other as the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Chivas USA 3-1 in MLS play Wednesday night.

The Whitecaps (6-5-4) posted their second consecutive win — something they had not done since the first two games of the season.

Chivas (3-9-2), meanwhile, has not won since beating the Vancouver at home on March 30.

Jordan Harvey had the other goal for the Whitecaps, who overcame an early 1-0 deficit, while Tristan Bowen replied for Chivas.

The game was turned on its head in first-half added time as Camilo and Harvey scored two minutes apart to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead.

Chivas saw its winless skid extended to nine games despite making an early impression on new coach Jose Luis Real, who made his MLS coaching debut after taking over from the fired Jose Luis Sanchez Sola.

Bowen opened the scoring in the seventh minute from the top right side of the Vancouver box as a result of poor marking and questionable goalkeeping. Harvey allowed Bowen to move in and fire into the top left corner past goalkeeper Brad Knighton, who appeared to misjudge the shot.

It was Chivas’ first MLS goal in a month, dating to a May 19 game against Real Salt Lake.

In the 33rd minute, Vancouver’s Kenny Miller fired a Camilo pass wide from outside the top of the Chivas box. But other scoring chances did not materialize until moments before half-time.

The Whitecaps received a scare in the 40th minute when defender Johnny Leveron went down after taking an elbow in the head from Carlos Alvarez, who received a yellow card. Leveron lay on his back for a few minutes as trainers tended to him, but he got up with his head wrapped in a black bandage and quickly returned to action.

The Whitecaps were already missing three centre backs to injuries and could not afford to lose another.

Harvey evened the score in the second minute of first-half added time when he put shot off Chivas defender Carlos Borja after Camilo inadvertently flicked a Russell Teibert pass on to him. It was Harvey’s third goal in four games.

Harvey also scored in Saturday’s 4-3 victory over New England and has seen his playing time increased after veteran defender Alain Rochat was traded to D.C. United.

Two minutes after Harvey’s goal, Camilo took a pass from Teibert, sidestepped Chivas defender Mario de Luna and fired a low shot into the left corner of the net. The goal came mere seconds before the half-time whistle, sending the jubilant Whitecaps into their dressing room with an unexpected 2-1 lead.

Camilo extended his scoring streak to three games and matched the seven goals he produced all of last season.

The Whitecaps controlled play in the first 30 minutes of the second half, prompting Chivas to make three substitutions but the moves had little effect.

Camilo extended Vancouver’s lead to 3-1 in the 81st minute as he fired a shot off a defender after Harvey’s rebound off a Chivas player came out to him.

The Brazilian had a chance for a hat-trick in added time, but his shot went off a defender, and Leveron had a shot blocked in the same sequence.

Notes: Teibert’s two assists extended his club-record streak to four games. He did not record any points in his first two MLS seasons. … Before the game, a moment of silence was held for late Chivas under-17/under-18 team captain Julio Chavez. He was killed in a car accident in his hometown of Modesto, Calif., over the weekend. … Leveron rejoined the Whitecaps after dressing as a reserve for Honduras on Tuesday night in a World Cup qualifier against the U.S.

MONTREAL – Home turf is a happy place for Marco Di Vaio.

The veteran striker scored his 10th goal of the Major League Soccer season Wednesday in a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo.

“I’m happy to score, but I want to score more,” said Di Vaio, who has recorded all but one of his goals at home. “But the important thing is we’re creating chances.”

Felipe Martins also scored as the Eastern Conference-leading Impact (9-3-2) improved to 6-0-1 at Saputo Stadium and won a fourth in a row at home.

Houston (6-5-4) is winless in its last five (0-3-2).

The crowd of 17,694 saw the Impact in full attack mode as they created chance after chance against a Houston side missing some key players before switching to a more defensive game in the second half.

“The first 35 minutes was probably the best we’ve played this season,” said Di Vaio.

That followed perhaps their worse performance when they lost 2-0 in Columbus on Saturday night.

“I knew the team was ready to respond,” said Impact coach Marco Schallibaum, who was back after serving a one-game suspension for arguing a call in a 2-1 win in Kansas City on June 1.

“Especially in the first half it was amazing to see the team. There were a lot of chances and very nice football. We were less good in the second, but we were very solid defensively.”

Daniele Paponi missed two good chances in the first eight minutes and had another called offside.

Only 13 minutes in, Patrice Bernier sent a clever pass over the defence and Felipe chested it down before scoring his third of the season.

The Dynamo wasted a glorious chance to tie it in the 20th minute when Matteo Ferrari was called for a late tackle in the area on Will Bruin. But Englishman Giles Barnes’ hooked the ball from the penalty spot well over the net.

Then it was Corey Ashe’s turn to misfire as he shanked an attempt to play the ball back to Houston goalie Tally Hall in the 32nd. Di Vaio ran it down, went in alone and calmly chipped it home.

Houston had a good chance after a free kick in the 58th, but Warren Creavalle’s left footed shot went just over the bar.

“There are ups and downs in every season, but for us it’s a matter of starting games better,” said Houston veteran Brian Ching. “They took the game to us for the first 25 minutes or so, but I thought we did well to create some opportunities after that.

“The difference was that they finished their chances and we didn’t.”

Di Vaio had the crowd on its feet in the 62nd as he headed Nyassi’s pass off the bar, then recovered the ball but shot just wide.

“Di Vaio works very hard and for his age, he’s very fit,” Schallibaum said of the 36-year-old. “He could have scored two or three more..

“He’s like Alessandro Nesta. He’s an asset for us. The young players learn from him.”

The 37-year-old Nesta also returned from a one-game ban to take back his spot in the central defence. The Impact have not lost a game that the former AC Milan star has started.

The crowd booed when Ching subbed in for Barnes in the 78th. Ching was claimed by Montreal in the 2012 expansion draft but asked to be dealt back to Houston.

Notes: Houston was missing two players to international duty, Honduran Boniek Garcia and American Brad Davis. … Montreal made four changes after their loss in Columbus over the weekend. Paponi and Andrea Pisanu started, while Sanna Nyassi was back from playing for Gambia. Alessandro Nesta returned from a one-game suspension. Justin Mapp sat out with a thigh injury.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings and city officials on Wednesday announced a $650 million plan for a new arena development for the NHL team in Detroit’s downtown entertainment and sports district.

Plans for the 18,000-seat arena were announced Wednesday at a meeting of economic development officials to approve the deal. Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch has long said he wanted a replacement for the 32-year-old Joe Louis Arena.

The Red Wings said there will be $367 million in private investment and $283 million in public funds in the complex, which would also include residential, retail and office space. Developers said the public money would come from existing economic development funds and requires no new taxes or funds from the cash-strapped city, which is the largest in the country under state financial oversight.

The city’s Downtown Development Authority approved a memorandum of understanding with Wayne County, home to Detroit, and Olympia Development of Michigan, which is owned by Mike and Marian Ilitch. Mike Ilitch also owns the Detroit Tigers, and his family owns Little Caesars Pizza and downtown Detroit’s Fox Theatre.

The arena would be at Interstate 75 and Woodward Avenue, near the Detroit Tigers’ Comerica Park and the Detroit Lions’ Ford Field.

Michigan lawmakers in December approved a measure allowing tax dollars collected by the Downtown Development Authority to be used for the development. The DDA has been allowed for nearly two decades to pay down Detroit’s general obligation bonds with about $12.8 million a year that otherwise would have gone to education statewide.

Developers and supporters of that legislation said it will create upward of 8,300 new construction jobs and pump $1 billion into Michigan’s economy. Opponents counter that funding a private stadium with taxpayer dollars shouldn’t be a priority, especially when that money was otherwise going to the School Aid Fund.

PADERBORN, Germany – Leonie Maier scored the lone goal of the game to lead Germany’s women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Canada on Wednesday.

Maier launched a shot from the right side in the 53rd minute to beat Canadian ‘keeper Erin McLeod.

The seventh-ranked Canadians have never beaten Germany, but had to have been pleased with their performance against the world’s No. 2-ranked team.

Germany had averaged three goals a game against Canada in the previous 10 meetings between the two teams.

Canada held the Germans scoreless for the first 45 minutes for the first time in its history.

“I think there were some real positives in there today,” said Canadian head coach John Herdman. “Defensively, we were able to hold them and there was some real resilience from the girls.”

Added captain Christine Sinclair: “John Herdman has us believing that we can beat any team.”

The Germans outshot Canada 19-4 in front of 9,781 fans, and had an 8-2 advantage in shots on target. The Germans took 15 corner kicks, while Canada had none.

“We’ll keep working. There is still some time left to catch these Germans,” Herdman said. “All in all, we had some good lessons. I am proud of the girls today.”

Two players made their debut for Canada’s senior women’s side — forward Melissa Busque started the game, while Rachel Melhado came on at centre back in the 72nd minute.

Substitute Danica Wu made her second appearance.

“Throughout the game, I got more and more comfortable,” Busque said. “I am super happy. I know there is more to come.”

“I am currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article,” Williams said in a statement released through her agent Wednesday. “What was written — what I supposedly said — is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame.”

The comment was made in one paragraph of a lengthy story posted online Tuesday about Williams, a 16-time Grand Slam title winner who is ranked No. 1 heading into Wimbledon, which starts next week.

Two players from the Steubenville, Ohio, high school football team were convicted in March of raping a drunken 16-year-old girl; one of the boys was ordered to serve an additional year for photographing the girl naked. The case gained widespread attention in part because of the callousness with which other students used social media to gossip about it.

“What happened in Steubenville was a real shock for me. I was deeply saddened,” Williams said in the statement. “For someone to be raped, and at only sixteen, is such a horrible tragedy! For both families involved — that of the rape victim and of the accused.”

According to the Rolling Stone story, Williams says the perpetrators of the crime “did something stupid,” and she asks: “Do you think it was fair, what they got?”

She adds, “I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you: Don’t take drinks from other people.”

Williams also is quoted as saying: “… she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Williams is in England preparing for Wimbledon.

“I have fought all of my career for women’s equality, women’s equal rights, respect in their fields — anything I could do to support women I have done,” she said in the statement. “My prayers and support always goes out to the rape victim. In this case, most especially, to an innocent sixteen year old child.”

Georges St-Pierre will reportedly defend his welterweight title on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas against No. 1 contender Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks.

The UFC had no official comment on the fight but the date and venue were reported by TVA Sports and the “UFC Tonight” TV show, with both citing sources. UFC president Dana White has said that November was the likely time.

The 32-year-old from Montreal has defended his 170-pound mixed martial arts championship eight times since winning it back from Matt (The Terror) Serra at UFC 83 in Montreal in April 2008.

Most recently, St-Pierre (24-2) won a unanimous decision over Nick Diaz in March at UFC 158. The champion has won 11 straight dating back to April 2007.

The hard-hitting Hendricks (15-1) has won six in a row since losing to Rick (The Horror) Story in December 2010. His last outing was a unanimous decision over Carlos (Natural Born Killer) Condit at UFC 158.

The November card is expected to be UFC 167 and could serve as an anniversary show. The UFC made its debut on Nov. 12, 1993.

EASTBOURNE, England – It wasn’t quite the Wimbledon warmup Canadian Milos Raonic was hoping for.

The top seed from Thornhill, Ont., dropped his second-round match Wednesday at the Eastbourne grass-court tournament, falling 6-2, 7-6 (7) decision to Croatian Ivan Dodig.

The Eastbourne event also wasn’t kind to Toronto’s Daniel Nestor, who earlier lost his first-round doubles event with Swedish partner Robert Lindstedt.

Raonic will open Wimbledon next week as the men’s 17th seed but heads to the All England Club badly lacking in grass confidence.

“I couldn’t have started in a worse way, I think I missed four backhands to start off the match,” said Raonic. “I had break chances and then lost my serve easily again.

“He was doing a lot of things well, but a lot of it comes down on me, things I didn’t do. Even in the second set I think it was pretty poor play.”

Raonic lost his first-round match on grass last week an event in Halle, Germany and immediately applied for a wild-card entry into Eastbourne. He was installed as the top seed based upon his No. 15 ATP world ranking.

“I can’t play much worse, so it’s only going to get better,” Raonic said. “I think I should be positive in that sense.”

Dodig registered more aces (12) than his hard-hitting 22-year-old Canadian opponent, who had nine in the match that lasted just under 90 minutes.

Raonic has an 8-8 career record on grass but is 0-2 against Dodig, who beat him on Barcelona clay in 2011.

Dodig took control of the opening set by breaking Raonic’s first serve. The 54th-ranked Dodig recorded a second break for a 5-2 lead when Raonic put a backhand into the net. A game later, the Dodig took the set with an overhead smash.

The two stayed on serve in the second set to force the tiebreaker. Raonic went ahead 2-0 before Dodig rallied to tie it 5-5.

Raonic saved one match point with an ace, then fired another to give himself a set point. However, it was Dodig who finally earned the upset win as Raonic’s return went out.

“I was trying to get a little bit closer and I had my chance at the tiebreak,” Raonic said. “But I don’t think I should let situations where I let two double faults from my opponent pass by and not win a tiebreaker.

“That’s pretty bad.”

The good news for Raonic is he believes his problems on grass can be fixed.

“It’s more me,” he said. “I’ve got to figure out my thing.

“It’s like I’m just not executing the things I need to execute. Obviously the surface doesn’t make it easy. I think it’s easier for me to figure out things on hard courts per se, but I think it’s all on my shoulders.”

Earlier, Marion Bartoli of France withdrew from the tournament with a viral infection, giving No. 2-seeded Li Na of China a walkover into the quarter-finals.

BOSTON – It’s just a game, but maybe this Stanley Cup final can heal as well as entertain.

The Boston Bruins know nothing can take away the pain of the Boston Marathon bombings that ravaged their city. Still they know that stringing together wins in the NHL post-season is bringing a smile to their sports-crazy home town.

“I think we help it in probably a large way,” Boston coach Claude Julien said Tuesday when asked whether the Bruins’ playoff run can in some small way help heal the city. “Everybody’s looking right now for something to cheer about, to smile about.

“I guess it doesn’t fix the things or the people that’s been lost. That’ll never be fixed. At the same time you’ve got to try and heal. As much as the city itself has been touched by that, so have we as a team. I’ve known that for a long time, that’s all we talked about in the dressing room. It really hit us hard.

“Right now we got to focus on doing our job and trying to stay focused on that so that in the end you hope that you can make that happen. But right now it’s got to be about us before we can even think about that. And if we think about ourselves and the job we need to do, hopefully the rest takes care of itself.”

The April 15 bombings killed three people and injured more than 260.

Two Bruins games were rescheduled in the aftermath of the attack. Julien’s team ended up finishing the season by playing seven games in 11 days. They won just two of them, wobbling into the playoffs mentally and physically exhausted.

After surviving a first-round charge by the Maple Leafs, the Bruins really have been Boston Strong. Monday night’s win over Chicago was the Bruins’ seventh straight at home. The Bruins are 8-2 this post-season at TD Garden, outscoring their opponents 28-17.

And Boston carries a 2-1 lead into Game 4 of the best-of-seven series with the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.

Veteran forward Shawn Thornton, a gritty fourth-liner who is a fan favourite, admitted that trying to relate hockey to a real-life horror was hard.

“It’s tough to talk about,” said the Bruins tough guy. “Just to put that into the same perspective as a hockey game, I think isn’t right either. So it’s a tough question to answer. I’m not going to lie.”

But he hopes the Bruins can make a difference,

“It’s tough to speak for that, but I’m hoping, yeah,” he said. “We come to the rink every day, and we love this city. If it helps, then amazing.”

Thornton called Boston “a small, big city.”

“You get to know a lot of people around here when you stick around. There’s a few of us that live here year-round now. There are good people here. Once you get to know people, they’ll do anything for you. So that helps. Sam Adams too, Harpoon. Good beers.”

Memories of the attack are still raw. A makeshift memorial is still on display at Copley Square and Boston Strong T-shirts are omnipresent.

The Bruins have quietly honoured many whose lives were affected by the bombings.

During the playoffs, their so-called “Fan Banner Captains” have had a Boston Strong theme.

For Game 3, the captains were Rob Rogers, Jenn Rogers, and Jennifer Lemmerman, the siblings of Sean Collier, an MIT Police Officer who was killed in a firefight with the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.

Bomb technicians, victims and their families, and first responders have similarly been honoured.

After the attacks, Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs pledged US$100,000 to The One Fund Boston, the charity established to help families affected by the bombing. The TD Garden, the NHL and the players association pledged $50,000 each.
