Much-needed funding to aid Banff hotel industry

Banff hotels will be able to fill desperately needed staff positions in the community that’s kept alive by tourism.

Hotel associations are applauding the federal government for its three-year pilot program that connects newcomers with jobs in the hotel industry.

General Manager Chris Barr of the Banff Aspen Lodge said the resort town has had labour shortages and high turnover in the hospitality industry.

“We operate at full capacity here in the summer months, so with even a 10 per cent deficiency, you know, we may not have enough servers to be able to serve our guests dining in our restaurants,” he said.

The program will have $7-million spread through five regions across the country.
