Late Broncos coach’s sons enlisted as draft runners for Flames

The Calgary Flames enlisted some special help with this weekend’s NHL Draft in Dallas. The two sons of Darcy Haugan, the late coach of the Humboldt Broncos, worked as draft runners for the team.

“They’ve always watched the draft because they’re coach’s kids so that’s something that they get, so yeah they’re really excited and they’ve been treated really well and it’s been a really nice opportunity,” mother Christina Haugan told Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Darcy was one of 16 people who died as a result of the April 6 crash, when the junior hockey team’s bus collided with a semi.  His sons Carson and Jackson were recently in Las Vegas for the NHL Awards with their mother, who delivered an emotional acceptance speech at the show when Darcy was posthumously honoured with the first ever Willie O’Ree community hero award.

“So I said well I feel a lot of pressure now because we gotta give them something to do Friday night,” said Flames general manager Brad Treliving, whose team traded away their first round pick and would not make any selections until Saturday.

“Everybody in the hockey world was affected by it and at the end of the day if we could provide a little time for them to have some fun and for them to be around the scouts and experience everything that goes on for the draft,” he said.

Christina said she expected the support for the Broncos to fade, but the hockey world has been amazing to families.
