Severe thunderstorm rocks Calgary and southern Alberta

Wild summer weather hits Calgary and surrounding areas Friday afternoon

Severe thunderstorms have rumbled through, bringing lightning, heavy rain and even hail.

Enmax confirms that there were several power outages in parts of Calgary, including the northwest neighbourhoods of Hawkwood and Dalhousie, Highland Park and Winston Heights in the northeast, and Shawnee Slopes in the southwest.

“We’ve had three brief outages this afternoon all related to lightning. They were restored really quickly, but we do anticipate some bad weather for the rest of the day and throughout the weekend, so we’re keeping a close eye on things and we appreciate everyone’s patience in the event there are outages. We will be restoring those as quickly and safely as possible,” said Gina Sutherland with Enmax.

Just before 2:30 Friday afternoon, Environment Canada upgraded their alert to a severe thunderstorm warning, and then it ended at around 3:30 p.m.

There were also reports of minor flooding in some areas.

Corey Colbran with the City of Calgary is advising people to avoid those spots and not drive through because you never know how deep the water is.

He adds people should monitor areas that have water buildup.

“Certainly with these short duration, high intensity events, can lead to some localized areas that will experience some of that backup into the street, but usually between 60 and 90 minutes that should be dissipating and flowing away.”

For now, it’s better to just be wary of any pooling water on the roads by either navigating around them when safe or finding a detour.
