Walk to End Elder Abuse happening Friday

A walk through Calgary streets hopes to bring awareness to an issue affecting 9,000 seniors in the city.

This Friday is the Walk to End Elder Abuse organized by carya, a group that offers support services to families.

Director Lisa Stebbins said it can be hard to intervene because seniors are often victimized by people they trust — but there are signs.

“They might start to seem confused, or you might actually see some physical signs — bruising, different things where they seem over-medicated, or that sort of thing.”

By spreading the word to the public, some positive changes can be made.

“The people that are maybe carrying out the actions against the older adults are often trusted or connected to the older adults, and they might be a son or daughter, and so it’s very difficult for that older adult to make accusations.”

People can sign up now for the walk, which leaves Eau Claire Market at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 15.
