Calgary’s Global Petroleum Show sees resurgence in 2018

The 50th annual Global Petroleum Show is underway in Calgary.

Unsurprisingly, attendance has been down for several years but this year could mark a turning point.

There are expected to be upwards of 50,000 people at the three-day conference and trade show.

“We’ve had a 25 per cent, actually just slightly over 25 per cent, increase in our pre-registrations in advance of the event,” said organizer Nick Samain.

Samain points out another good sign is that there are just over 1,000 exhibiting companies, 100 more than last year.

“It’s very important to bring together all those stakeholders involved, from the ministerial level, from industry leaders and so on, to be able to have those important conversations on how we’re going to solve some of these issues,” he explained.

Samain says there are lots of new technologies on the show floor and a business and tech conference, adding the industry has changed a lot, and the show has needed to reflect that.

“One of the bigger ones that’s in the news is that digital revolution, you know, blockchain, artificial intelligence, deep machine learning, edge computing, we have seen very big growth in our exhibitor base featuring those technologies.”

There’s even some fun.

“On Wednesday, June 13, it’s the 50th anniversary celebration for the Global Petroleum Show, so that’s a great concert,” he said.
