Concussions the focus of week long campaign

This week marks Parachute Safe Kids Week and the main focus for this year’s campaign is concussions.

Medical Officer of Health with Alberta Health Services David Strong said concussions are an important topic to talk about at any age.

“Concussions have been in the news a lot in the recent years and largely around professional athletes, but concussions can happen in children,” he said. “In fact, it’s falls that are the main reason for emergency department visits for children under the age of four and the leading cause of concussions in children are falls.”

Strong says parents should always make sure the necessary precautions are being taken, whether that be their kid wearing a helmet while riding a bike, or even making sure something is set up so younger kids don’t fall down the stairs.

He adds people don’t have to have a direct hit to the head to suffer a concussion, any sudden movement in the body that shifts to the head can also cause one.
