‘It’s infuriating, it’s embarrassing’: Woman speaks out after friend accused of faking cancer

A Calgary woman said she’s infuriated and embarrassed after finding out her friend allegedly faked having cancer.

Police announced fraud charges against Krysta Lyn Williams, 30, Tuesday, alleging the woman bilked thousands of dollars out of people under the guise of fundraising for treatment.

Nicky Arsenault tells CityNews, she had no reason to believe Williams wasn’t sick.

“She said she was doing treatment, and then would come in and have her head shaved, she would cut herself and say they were cancer bumps,” she said.

Arsenault said it wasn’t until she heard about the charges that she started seeing the red flags.

“Now that I know the truth, I just don’t understand how someone could do that, I mean, like I’ve said to other people, I’ve been affected by cancer. My mom had it, my friend’s father has it right now, my friend’s son has it right now, like these are people who don’t have a lot of money and they still contributed to this cause,” she said.

A GoFundMe page raised over $7,000 before it was shut down.

“There’s clearly a very serious illness at hand here, a very serious mental illness,” Arsenault said.

“But, I also don’t want people to you know, be scared and not contribute in the future.”

The charges have not yet been proven in court.
