Calgary area firefighter tragically dies in off-duty dirt bike accident

Members of the Rocky View Fire Department are grieving the loss of one of their own.

An off duty firefighter from Cochrane was on a holiday weekend out with his family northwest of Calgary when there was a dirt bike accident.

STARS, EMS and Sundre Fire responded to the tragic call, west of Sundre, at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

The injured member had to be transported from a remote area to the Bearberry Community Centre, but once there the 30-year-old was pronounced dead.

Rocky View Fire Chief Randy Smith said he was a young man just starting his career.

“I’ve only been with Rocky View for four years and he has been there as long as I have but he is one of our steady part-time guys and you know he is always there and really well liked amongst the group.”

Smith added they are still trying to piece together what happened but said the RCMP have been amazing checking in to see how the guys at the station are doing.

Condolences have poured out from detachments across the province including the Calgary Fire Department, Canmore Fire and Rescue and Spruce Grove Fire.

No one else was injured in the incident, at this time the members name is not being released.
