Calgary understands position regarding flooding, risk remains

It’s so far so good for Calgary and parts of southern Alberta which may have been worried about a recurrence of flooding such as devastated the region nearly five years ago.

Frank Frigo, who does watershed analysis for the city, says the snowpack from a long winter was 30 per cent higher than normal, but that doesn’t necessarily translate into heavy flooding.

He says the summer following conditions in the Pacific that led to the snowpack tends to be drier.

Frigo cautions that even one severe weather event could still cause flooding problems.

But he adds flood mitigation efforts that followed the devastating 2013 floods would reduce damage now by almost one-third.
