Calgarians encouraged to explore city in annual Jane’s Walk

People are invited to learn more about Calgary by taking a stroll across the city.

The 11th annual Jane’s Walk kicked off Friday with a total of 78 walking tours planned throughout the weekend.

Calgary Foundation Citizen Engagement Associate Julie Black explained Janes Walk began 12 years ago in Toronto.

“By friends of Jane Jacobs, Jane was an urban activist and writer who really shaped both cities that she lived in New York and then Toronto and also the whole field of urban planning,” Black said.

“To honour her legacy, people who were touched by her work and activism, people in cities and small towns around the globe now organize one weekend a year — a festival of walking tours to really share and get people to experience right where we live.”

Black said there is a wide range of walks for everyone to enjoy from nature to urban planning and development.

“The chance to see and talk about things like density, things like transportation and how all that works and we have others more about art and creativity, so people have a chance to walk with writers, walk with poets.”

She hopes this encourages people to get out of their familiar surroundings and go to a neighbourhood they don’t know.
