Fuel frenzy in Bragg Creek over cheap gas

There were long lines at the Bragg Creek Trading Post Monday afternoon as motorists looked to cash in on some cheap gas.

The Teghtmeyer family decided to sell gas for 32 cents per litre to celebrate their last day in business. It was 32 cents to mark their founder’s first year in business back in 1932.

Owner Jonn Teghtmeyer says it’s bittersweet.

“We’ve been in business in Bragg Creek for 86 years, we’ve been a Shell station 66 years and we built this site in 1996 so we’ve been here for almost 22 years,” Teghtmeyer said. “We’ve sold the business to Shell Canada, we’re going to be their landlords, they’re going to lease the building from us and we’re moving on to other things, potentially in Bragg Creek.”

Motorists began lining up three hours in advance of the sale for a chance at this once in a lifetime price.

“I think the cheapest was about 80 that I’ve seen, definitely I haven’t seen 32 cents,” said Alysa who drove in from Abbeydale in Calgary.

She was able to make it through to a pump before the station ran out of its 6,000 litres.

Others though like Cale were not so lucky, he had to fill up with premium so he would have enough gas to get home.

It took roughly 90 minutes for the Teghtmeyer family to sell out of regular fuel, once they did they began offering premium at a discount.

Once the sale started, drivers began to fill up their slip tanks and jerry cans. After the first few vehicles, management capped the amount of gas per person at 64 litres.

Andre was in Cochrane listening to the radio and heard about the sale. He hasn’t seen 32 cents since he was about 12 years old.

“This is a one time deal, I don’t think it’ll ever happen again,” he said.

The Bragg Creek station will now close for renovations and the new owner is expected to re-open the gas station sometime in June.
