City impound hosting adopt-a-thon this weekend

The City of Calgary’s impound is bursting with cats and dogs, and it’s trying to make room for many more that it’s expecting this spring.

“It’s only April, and so it’s going to be kitten season soon, puppy season soon, we’re already close to maximum capacity right now so we want to have room for all the animals we can help,” said customer service representative Patti Smadis.

She’s hoping Calgarians meet their match at the City of Calgary Animal Service Centre this weekend when potential pet owners will receive half off their adoption fees during a three-day adopt-a-thon. Smadis said an influx of animals are impounded in the spring when cats and dogs are eager to get outside and roam.

“We do a check for microchips, and we do a check of tattoos, so we go through all that process. If they don’t have any identification on them, we can’t do anything about it,” said Smadis. “We’re near capacity with our cats right now, so we have about 30 cats available for adoption.”

There are about 67 cats at the Animal Services Centre and nearly 40 dogs, eight of which are up for adoption. Before the animals become available to new homes, officials work to reunite them with their owners.

It will cost Calgarians $80 to bring a cat home and $106 for a dog. The adopt-a-thon runs Saturday until Monday at the City of Calgary Animal Services Centre at 2201 Portland St. S.E.
