Poutine week kicks off with The Gravy Bowl

The Calgary Stampeders are used to competition, but this one’s a little out of their comfort zone.

Nine teams made up of Stampeders players, chefs and breweries will be fighting it out for The Gravy Bowl Saturday(April 21), to launch Calgary Poutine Week.

Creator Karen Richards says a panel of judges will choose the winning combination of fried potatoes, cheese curd, gravy and toppings.

“You can get the gravy bowl poutines throughout the week at the restaurants, and they compete to sell the most for MealShare.”

In all, 85 restaurants are part of the week long fundraiser and celebration of the Canadian food creation.

Richards says last year more than 8,000 poutines were consumed, allowing MealShare Calgary to donate the same number of meals to youth in need.

Calgary Poutine Week runs until April 28.
