ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting in Okotoks

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team has been called in to investigate a police-involved shooting in Okotoks.

RCMP say on Thursday night, officers received a complaint of a suspicious man in a parked car in the Safeway parking lot.

After responding, there was a confrontation between officers and the suspect and a firearm was discharged.

The 25-year-old man then took off in the vehicle, causing two officers to fall to the ground. He was located a short distance away and arrested. He was transported to hospital as a precautionary measure, but injuries are unclear.

The officers were assessed by EMS for minor injuries but did not need to go to hospital.

ASIRT Executive Director Susan Hughson says her team of investigators worked through the night out at the scene.

“There are tasks lined up, and I know that some of them are out doing interviews and things like that.”

Hughson adds they are looking for witnesses to come forward.

The police watchdog wrapped up its investigation of the scene around 10 a.m. Friday.
